The Full story of Flowers

On the auspicious days of Dhanteras (Diwali), we Indians chant following mantra, which is from Bhagwatam. It’s a custom to chant this mantra and then offer flowers to God Dhanwantaree(धन्वंतरी).

सेवंतिका बकुल चंपक पाटलाब्जै
पुन्नाग जाती करवीर रसाल पुष्पै:|
बिल्वप्रवाल तुलसी दल मालतीभिस्त्वां
पूजयामि जगदीश्वर मे प्रसीद

Apart from the ritualistic importance, this mantra mentions some of the names of flowers which are normally offered to Bhagwan. And we all believe that we can please Bhagwan by offering flowers. It is also considered as by offering flowers to Bhagwan, we can uplift the devotion instincts.

The same way, kids are also sometimes denoted to as flowers because of the born innocence, benevolence and insensitivity towards greed.

Each and every known civilization has given utmost importance to the flowers. Be it religious , or any other front of human life. In Indian culture, we have 16 sanskaras, and in all the sanskara of an individual, starting from Garbhadhan to funeral, Flowers play very important role. Be it Wastushanti or House warming or any other auspicious day or occasion, flowers are very important. Even if whenever we have to worship the lord, and if we don’t have flowers, then we chant mantra and offer those mantras to the lord. These mantras are also called as Mantrapushpanjalee.

Be it a believer or an atheist, flowers attract both. Scientists are yet to invent a better way to express the love of a lover for his beloved,  a way better than offering a flower.

Even if when we go to see someone after many days or any celebration or even if we want to congratulate someone, we use flowers. Right?

Rich or poor, flowers have been very significant part of known human life.

By the way, For last almost two months we have been wandering western Ghats of Pune. And we have seen numerous changes, the ghats have undergone. Whatever information I have given above about the flowers, is not a random thought in my mind. In these two months, I have witnessed the best part of Sahyadri’s mystic. And that is nothing but the flowering of Sahyadri. In my earlier updates, you might have seen the splendid pictures of the flowers that we have seen. However, our last weekend’s excursion, according to me was the peak period of this flowering season in Sahyadri.

Normally ,when we talk about flowering in Sahyadri, we just can’t bypass the very name Kaas Plateau. Which is the paradise for the fans of Sahyadri. I haven’t yet been to Kaas Plateua however, after seeing the flowering in the area near our campsite, I feel that there is no need to go to Kaas Plateau. We could see all the species of Kaas plateau at Nisargshala.

Coming back to our discussion, Is there any reason why we offer flowers to Bhagwan? Is there any reason why always a flower is proposed to a beloved person? Is there any reason why we congratulate with flowers? Why flowers are so imperative in our lives? Do flowers teach us something? And if yes what do flowers teach us?

I tried to decipher the questions per my understand and logical analysis. There are namely two lessons flowers teach us. First is Change and Second lesson is consistency. These are the opposite poles in philosophical context.

Lets try to dig in.

Change

Flowers have a life span of very limited time. They blossom, attract bees, insects, beetles and then they fade, wilt. According to my understanding, we offer flowers to God, because flowers remind us the inconsistency of material life. With flowers in our hand, we surrender to the lord telling ourselves that the material life is not going to last forever though its beautiful, attractive and passionate.. It has an end to it. So let me give away greed and let my mind settle in the shadow of love towards Bhagwan. Everything that we try to seek in our life that is not going to last for long. Its all variable.

Same way, when a man offers flowers to his beloved, the message is very clear. The beauty of the lady is constrained by time. This beauty has an end. So My lady, why don’t you give away the sense of being beautiful and appreciate the only fact that we are all human beings. Same may be the case with gifting flowers to a person to congratulate him. The message is very clear, that this success, glory, glamour is not going to last forever. So don’t fall prey to this time bound success, and always look high up to your ultimate goal.

Consistency

Flowers hold infinite power. The power to give birth to yet another universe. Even though the flowers are time bound, they fade, they wilt, they still have ability to retain its existence in the form of seeds and stay dormant. And whenever there is favourable atmospheric condition, they re-surface. whatever wild flowering plants that I saw in my explorations, there average lifespan is one year. The life cycle goes like this – Seeds – Sapling – plant – growth – Flowering – again seeds. Isn’t there something interesting? Whatever life force is there, that life force changes its form. It transforms from one form to another and finally, when the atmospheric conditions seem unfavourable to retain the form, it goes dormant in the form of seed. Any analogy you could relate this to? However, the second lesson also very clear and that is consistency of life force. Lets talk about the flowering plants which we saw during our camping trips. What do you think , for how many years this life cycle has been running without fail? Couple of years? Hundreds of years? Thousands of years? Or lacs or crores of years? Whatever is the answer, the fact remains that this life cycle is being executed consistently for many years since the beginning of time. What do we learn from this?

फुलांची फुल स्टोरी…

दिवाळी जवळ येत आहे. दिवाळीमध्ये धन्वंतरी पुजनामध्ये खाली मंत्र म्हंणण्याचा प्रघात आपल्याकडे आहे. श्रीमत भागवतामध्ये (३/१५/१९) मध्ये सदर श्लोक पहायवयास मिळतो.

यात अनेकविध फुले तसेच वनस्पती, वृक्षांचा उल्लेख येतो. व या व अशा प्रकारच्या फुलांच्या समर्पणाने जगदीश्वर प्रसन्न (प्रसन्न म्हणजे आनंदीत) होतो. अशा आशयाचा हा श्लोक आहे. याचा अर्थ फुले समर्पण भाव जागा करु शकतात असा होतो.
लहान मुलांच्या निरागस, निर्लोभ स्वभावाला अनेकदा आपण फुलांची उपमा देतो. इथुन तिथुन सगळ्या संस्कृत्यांमध्ये फुलांना अनन्य साधारण महत्व आहे. सांप्रदायिक असो वा अन्य काहीही प्रसंग असो. फुले मनुष्य जीवनाचा अविभाज्य असा घटक आहे. भारतीय संस्कृती मध्ये तर सोळा संस्कार पैकी जवळ जवळ सगळ्याच संस्कारांमध्ये फुलांना अनन्य साधारण महत्व आहे. गर्भाधाना पासुन ते अगदी अग्नीसंस्कारापर्यंत सगळीकडेच फुले खुप महत्वाची भुमिका पार पाडतात. भुमिपुजन असो वा वास्तुशांती की गृहप्रवेश..फुले सगळीकडेच. हेच काय तर फुलांच्या अभावी जर मंत्राद्वारे भगवंताची प्रार्थना करायची असेल तर त्या मंत्रांना नुसते मंत्र न म्हणता मंत्र पुष्पांजली म्हणतात.
आस्तिक असो वा नास्तिक फुलांनी सर्वांना मोहुन टाकलेले दिसते.
युगल प्रेमाच्या आविष्कार अभिव्यक्तिसाठी फुलांच्या इतके प्रभावी माध्यम अजुनही आधुनिक विज्ञानाला सापडले नाही.
कुणास शुभेच्छा द्यावयाच्या असतील तरीही भेटवस्तु सोबत आपण पुष्पगुच्छ देतो. अगदीच भेटवस्तु शक्य नसेल तर फुल न फुलाची पाकळी तरी देतोच. श्रीमंत असो व गरीब फुले साथ सर्वांनाच देतात. फुलांचे मानवी जीवनातील महत्व अनन्यसाधारण आहे यात दुमत नसावे. असो.

आम्ही निसर्गशाळेच्या माध्यमातुन मागील दोन तीन महीन्यांमध्ये सह्याद्रीमध्ये अनेक पदभ्रमण व निसर्गसहलींचे आयोजन केले. तसे आम्ही नेहमीच करीत असतो. पण मागील दोन तीन महिन्यांचे विशेष असे आहे की वर जे फुल महात्म्य मी गायिले त्या फुलांचा साक्षात्कार , त्यांच्या नैसर्गिक अधिवासात मला झाला. व फुलांचे नयनरम्य, मनोहर व देहभान हरवणारे रुप अनुभवास आले. माझ्या मागील काही लेखांमध्ये देखील ह्या फुलांच्या साक्षात्काराचा उल्लेख कमी अधिक झालेला आहेच. पण अगदी अलीकडच्या म्हणजे मागील आठवड्यातील निसर्ग सहलींमध्ये फुलांच्या फुलण्याचा परमोच्च काळच असेल वाटले.

तसे आपणास सह्याद्रीतील फुले म्हंटले की कास पठार आठवतेच आठवते. आणि का नाही आठवणार. कास पठार व त्यावरील पुष्पोत्सव आहेच मुग्ध करणारा. मागच्या आठवड्यातील सहलीमध्ये तर मी तोरणा किल्ला जांभळा झालेला पाहीला. तोरण्याचा पश्चिमेकडील कडा आणि आणि बुधला माची व तिचा उतार सगळेच्या सगळे जांभळ्या तेरड्याने रंगवले होते. अशी अनेक अतिसुंदर दृश्ये मला पहावयास मिळाली. माझे अजुन कास पठार पाहणे झालेले नाही. पुढच्या वर्षी नक्की जाणार कास ला. पण आमच्या निसर्गसहलीतुनच मला सह्याद्रीच्या ह्या फुलांच्या रंगबाजीचा साक्षात्कार झाला. हे ही नसे थोडके.

का बर देवाला फुले वाहीली जात असतील? का प्रियकर प्रियसीला फुल च देत असेल? का शुभेच्छा देताना फुलांचाच उपयोग केला जात असेल? फुलांना एवढे महत्व मानवी जीवनामध्ये का बर प्राप्त झाल असेल ?
हि रंगीबेरंगी आपल्याला काही तरी सांगण्याचा प्रयत्न तर करीत नाहीत ना? नक्की काय संदेश मिळतो फुलांकडुन मानवास?

माझ्या आकलन आणि पृथ्थकरण करण्याच्या सीमीत क्षमतेवर मला वाटते की ही फुल दोन परस्पर विरोधी संदेश मानवास देतात. पहीला म्हणजे अनित्यता व दुसरा म्हणजे नित्यता.

अनित्यता 

फुले फार कमी कालावधीत संपतात. म्हणजे ती फुले राहत नाहीत. सुकुन जातात. त्यातील सौंदर्य , सुगंध , रंग सगळे काही संपते. फुल म्हणुन जे काही अस्तित्वात असते ते संपते. तद्वतच आपण देखील परमेश्वराला भेटायला जाताना, जणु फुलांप्रमाणेच नश्वर असणारे सगळे काही जणु परमेश्वराचे चरणी अर्पण करुन जे कधी ही नष्ट होणार नाही असा ईश्वर जवळ करतो. हे करताना आपल्या मनी हा भाव उत्पन्न व्हायला हवा की आपण कितीही प्रयत्न केले तरी आज जे भौतिक सुख किंवा दुःख अस्तित्वात आहे ते उद्या नसणार आहे. जे काही आहे ते क्षणभंगुर आहे. व हे सारे क्षणभंगुर असणारे त्यागुन जे अविनाशी आहे असे परम तत्व, ब्रम्ह तत्व भाविकाने अंगिकारले पाहीजे असा संदेश ही फुल देत असावीत असे मला आताशा वाटु लागले आहे.

नित्यता

फुलामध्ये अफाट शक्ती आहे. ही शक्ती पुन्हा नव्याने सृष्टीची निर्मिती करीत असते. क्षणभंगुर असणा-या छोट्याशा मर्यादीत कालावधीमध्ये देखील, स्वतचे अस्तित्व सुप्त बीज अवस्थेमध्ये टिकवुन ठेवणे आणि योग्य संधी मिळताच पुन्हा नव्याने नव्या जगाला जन्म देणे ही देखील फुलांची कमाल आहे. मी काही वर्षा पुर्वी पाहीलेला एक ल्युसी नावाचा इंग्रजी सिनेमा पाहीलेला, मला आठवला. जे काही जीवनतत्व (बॉडी सेल्स) आपणा सर्वांमध्ये आहे ते देखील अशाच प्रकारे उत्तरोत्तर अधिकाधिक ज्ञान मिळविण्यासाठी प्रयत्नशील असते व हे ज्ञान मिळविण्यासाठी हे जीवनतत्व शरीराची मदत घेत असते. जीवंत राहण्यासाठी सकारात्मक परीस्थीती असेल तर हे तत्व वाढत राहते व ज्यावेळी परीस्थीती नकारात्मक होते त्यावेळी हे जीवनतत्व लाखो करोडो वर्षांचे ज्ञान जे पेंशींमध्ये असते ते ज्ञान टिकवण्यासाठी नवीन बॉडी सेल्स तयार करते म्हणजेच नवीन जीवशास्त्रीय शरीर तयार करते. यास प्रजनन असे म्हणतात. सिनेमा मुळातुनच पाहण्यासारखा आहे त्यामुळे इथे त्याविषयी जास्त लिहित नाही. पण जसे सिनेमामध्ये मानवी ज्ञान-विज्ञानाच्या पिढ्यानुपिढ्या संक्रमनाविषयी संकल्पना मांडली आहे त्याच प्रमाणे सर्व चराचरात देखील हाच प्रवाह दिसुन येतो असे मला वाटते.
स्वतचे अस्तित्व अपरंपार टिकवुन ठेवणे, जितके होईल तितके टिकवुन ठेवणे व त्यासाठी नवनवीन युक्त्या करणे, ज्ञान आत्मसात करणे, व टिकण्यासाठी आवश्यक ते सर्व करणे. पहा ना वटवृक्ष एखादा अगदी शे दोनशे वर्षे जुना असु शकतो. त्याच्या त्या जीवन काळामध्येच तो नवीन पिढी निर्माण करतो, नवीन फुले, बीजे तयार करुन. कारण त्या वृक्षास ( त्या जीवनतत्वास ) टिकायचे आहे. मला सह्याद्रीमध्ये दिसलेल्या त्या असंख्य पुष्प वनस्पतींचे आयुष्य साधारण एका वर्षाचे असते असे दिसुन येते. म्हणजे बीजापासुन रोप, त्याची वाढ व नंतर फुले आणि व पुन्हा बीज या चक्राला साधारणपणे एक वर्ष लागत. त्यामुळे या सर्व पुष्प वनस्पतींना वर्षायु असे देखील म्हणतात. पण खरच नीट विचार केल्यावर समजते की हे आयुष्य केवळ एका वर्षाचे नाहीये. हा एक खुप मोठा प्रवास आहे. जो अनंताकडुन अनंताकडे जातो. अनंत म्हणायचे कारण एवढेच आहे की आपल्या इंद्रीयगम्य ज्ञानाच्या कक्षेत ह्या प्रवासाची सुरुवात व शेवट, येत नाही. माणसाचे देखील यापेक्षा वेगळे ते काय असु शकते?
ह्या दिवाळीच्या निमित्ताने , आपण ही अनेकविध प्रकारे फुलांचा वापर करणार असु. प्रत्येक फुल आपणास हे दोन संदेश देत आहे. हे संदेश स्वीकारण्यासाठी आपण तयार आहोत का? प्रत्येक फुल आपणास नित्य आणि अनित्य अशी दोन्ही तत्वे सांगत आहे. काय आपण ती ऐकु शकतो?
