प्राचीन भारतीय साहित्य किंवा आख्यायिका, दंतकथांमध्ये या सर्प व सर्पधराची कथा न येण्याचे कारण असे असेल की भारतीय खगोल शास्त्रज्ञांनी कल्पिलेल्या २७ (वेदकाळात २८) नक्षत्रांच्या पट्ट्यात हा तारकापुंज येत नाही. अत्यंत प्रगत असणा-या भारतीय खगोल शास्त्रामध्ये पृथ्वी, सुर्य व इतर ग्रहांच्या अभ्यासाने कालनिश्चय करुन कालगणनेची सुत्र मांडली. कदाचित हजारो वर्षांपुर्वी बनवलेली ही सुत्रे आज ही तितकीच उपयोगाची आहेत. त्यामुळे निव्वळ कथा कल्पना विस्तार की ज्याचा खगोलशास्त्राशी काही संबंध नाही अशा गोष्टी भारतीय खगोल शास्त्रामध्ये खुप कमी प्रमाणात आढळतात.

आपल्या भागातुन, सध्या सायंकाळी ७ च्या सुमारास दक्षिण दिशेला, क्षितिजीच्या थोडेसे वर, अंधारत असताना या नक्षत्रातील तारे चमकु लागतात. व पुढ्चे २ ते अडीच तासच आपण हे नक्षत्र आकाशामध्ये पाहु शकतो. नंतर हे मावळते. खालील आकृतीमधील इंग्रजीमध्ये Scorpius असे लिहिलेले जे आडवे झालेले नक्षत्र दिसते आहे तेच वृश्चिक नक्षत्र होय.
