An Overnight Nature Experience at Nisargshala

This special retreat is designed for parents and children studying in 1st to 4th grade.

It is an opportunity for families to step away from screens and busy routines and spend meaningful time together in nature. The retreat focuses on observation, experiential learning and building a deep connection with Mother Earth.

At Nisargshala, children do not just hear about nature. They experience it directly through forests, streams and the night sky.

Activities

Deep Dense Jungle Trek
Participants will walk through the forests of Velhe and learn about the ecosystem of the Western Ghats. The trek will also introduce the traditional concept of Sacred Groves (Devarai) and how communities protected forests for generations.

Stream Exploration
Children and parents will enjoy a refreshing dip in a natural forest stream and observe the small aquatic life that thrives in these ecosystems.

Stargazing with Telescope
Participants will observe the Moon, planets and deep sky objects through telescopes and learn to identify constellations in the night sky.

Bonfire Gathering
An evening around the bonfire with stories, discussions and quiet moments in nature.

Midnight Milky Way Sighting
A late night sky observation session where participants will witness the Milky Way galaxy stretching across the sky.

Accommodation and Meals

Participants will stay in comfortable tents in the natural surroundings of Nisargshala.

Hemant Vavale
Founder of Nisargshala

Hemant has spent years exploring the forests and mountains of the Sahyadri and working with children through nature education programs. Through storytelling and experiential learning, he introduces children to forest ecosystems, biodiversity and the wonders of the night sky. His sessions combine science, mythology and real world observations, making learning engaging and memorable for young minds.

About Nisargshala

Nisargshala is a nature learning space located in Velhe near Pune, surrounded by the forests of the Sahyadri mountains.

For more than a decade, Nisargshala has been conducting nature camps for children, astronomy and stargazing events and experiential environmental education programs.

The core philosophy of Nisargshala is to help children build a deep emotional connection with nature through direct experiences.

Tentative Itinerary

Day 1

1:00 PM – Arrival and Check-in
Participants arrive at Nisargshala and tents are allocated.
1:15 PM – Lunch
Simple and nutritious lunch served.
2:00 PM – Welcome Circle and Orientation
Introduction to the retreat, safety guidelines and getting familiar with the camp environment.
2:45 PM – Nature Observation Walk
A gentle walk around the campus observing plants, insects and natural patterns.
4:15 PM – Deep Jungle Trek and Sacred Grove Exploration
A guided forest walk to understand the ecosystem of the Western Ghats and the concept of sacred groves.
5:45 PM – Stream Exploration
Relaxation near the forest stream with opportunities to observe aquatic life.
6:30 PM – Tea and Evening BBQ Snacks
7:30 PM – Stargazing Session
Observation of the Moon, planets and deep sky objects through telescopes.
