या प्रदुषणाविषयी तुम्हाला माहित आहे का?
एकदा अमेरिकेमध्ये भुकंपाचे झटके बसले. त्यामुळे मध्यरात्री वीज बोर्डाच्या अधिका-यांनी धोका टाळला जावा म्हणुन सर्व शहरातील वीज पुरवठा बंद केला. मध्यरात्र उलटुन गेली होती. वीजेच्या उपकरणांवर अवलंबुन असलेले आधुनिक मानवी जीवाची मात्र थोड्याच वेळात तगमग झाली. हजारो लोक त्या मध्य रात्री रस्त्यावर आले. बाहेर आल्यावर त्यांना आकाशात शहराच्या वर, अगदी माथ्यावर एक मोठा ढग दिसला. त्यात विविध रंग होते. काहीजणांना तो ढग एखादे परग्रह वासीयांचे यान आहे अस वाटुन शेकडो लोकांनी हेल्प लाईन ला फोन करुन पृथ्वीवर परग्रहवासीयांनी आक्रमण केले असल्याचे सांगितले व तात्काळ मदत मागितली. असे शेकडो फोन/तक्रारी आल्याने परग्रहांचा अभ्यास करणा-या मंडळींशी संपर्क साधला गेला.
सकाळी सगळ्या वृत्त वाहिन्यांवर हीच बातमी होती. थोड्यावेळाने उलगडा झाला की ते परग्रह वासीयांचे यान किंवा ढग नसुन आपल्या आकाशगंगेच्या केंद्रस्थानाचा पट्टा आहे.
ही खरी गोष्ट १९९४ सालची आहे. मानवी संस्कृती वैज्ञानिक प्रगतीमुळे मागील शतकांमध्ये मानवी ज्ञात इतिहासातील सर्वात उंच अशा स्थानी जाऊन बसली आहे. मानवी जीवन सुकर, सुलभ होण्यासाठी, आयुष्यमान वाढण्यासाठी हजारो शोध लागले आहेत. त्या शोधांचे रुपांतर उत्पादनांमध्ये होऊन अब्जावधी लोकांच्या जीवनामध्ये, जीवनशैलीमध्ये बदल झालेला आपणास दिसुन येतो.
वीजेवर किंवा बॅटरीवर प्रकाशित होणा-या बल्ब म्हणजे दिव्यांचा शोध निःसंकोच एक महान शोध आहे. एक बटण दाबले की अंधकाराला आपण आपल्यापासुन दुर करतो. पुर्वी कामे सुर्यास्तासोबत थांबायची, खेळणे थांबायचे व माणसे, इतर प्राणीमात्रांप्रमाणेच, आपापल्या घरट्यांकडे परतायची. बल्बच्या प्रकाशाने, सुर्यप्रकाशावर अवलंबुन असलेली आपली कामे, रात्रीच्या वेळी करण्याची सोय केली. आता रात्री-अपरात्री, नव्हे नव्हे अहोरात्र मनुष्य कामामध्ये दिसतो. खेळांचे देखील असेच झाले आहे. रात्री-अपरात्री शहरातील रस्त्यांवरुन लोक बिनधास्त फिरत असतात ते बल्बच्या उपयोगितेमुळेच. बरोबर ना?
प्रकाश प्रदुषण म्हणजे नेमके काय?
पण तुम्हाला माहित आहे का की प्रकाश देणा-या बल्ब ला आणखी एक शापित, काळी बाजु देखील आहे. आपल्या गरजेपेक्षा जास्त असलेला प्रकाश एका अर्थाने आपण पर्यावरणात सोडतो व प्रकाश कच-याच्या रुपाने आपले पर्यावरण प्रदुषित करीत असतो. या प्रकाश प्रदुषणामुळे पर्यावरणास खुप मोठा धोका निर्माण झालेला आहे. निसर्ग चक्रातील असे अनेक प्राणी, पक्षी, किटक, सरीसृप आहेत की ज्यांचे जीवन चक्र काळोखावरच अवलंबुन असते. त्या त्या प्राणीमात्राचेच नुसते नुकसान होते असे नाही, तर निसर्गसाखळीवर याचा दुरगामी परिणाम होतो.
नुसतं पर्यावरणाच नुकसान होतय असे नाही. मानवी शरीर देखील रात्रीच्या वेळी आराम करण्यासाठी झोप काढण्यासाठी बनलेले आहे. आपण आपल्या नैसर्गिक बायोकेमिकल रिदम ला हरवुन बसलो आहोत. आपल्या शरीरातील जैव-रासायनिक क्रिया प्रक्रिया नैसर्गिक प्रकाशाशी सुसंगत आहेत. आपण ते बिघडवुन ठेवले आहे. सोबतच आपण कायमचे रात्रीच्या, करोडो ता-यांनी भरलेल्या आकाशाचा नजारा घालवुन बसलो आहोत. आकाश म्हणजे काळाचा असा एक पडदा आहे की ज्यावर प्रकृतीने ता-यांच्या रुपाने विणकाम, भरतकाम, नक्षीकाम केले आहे. काळाच्या याच पडद्याकडे एकटक पाहुन आपल्या पुर्वजांनी प्रकृतीचा, अंतरिक्षाचा, ग्रहांचा, ता-यांचा, दिवस-रात्र, ऋतु-चक्राचा अभ्यास केला होता. आधुनिक मनुष्य मात्र हा काळाचा पडदा बल्ब च्या प्रकाशरुपी अंधारात हरवुन बसला आहे.
आपले दुर्दैव बघा की आकाश तर आहे अगदी आपल्या डोक्याच्या वर, पण दिसत अजिबात नाही. रात्रीचे आकाश आपल्या जीवनातील एक अविभाज्य घटक आहे. अचंबित करणारे ते तारांगण, आपल्या लौकिक स्पर्धेला कःपदार्थ अनंत असे अंतरिक्ष, या अफाट विश्वातील गुढवाद या सा-या गोष्टींना आपण आता पोरके झालो आहोत.
आपल्या परिसरात प्रकाशप्रदुषण कसे आहे आपणास खालील चित्रामध्ये पाहता येईल.
आंतरराष्ट्रीय डार्क स्काय असोसियेशन ने प्रकाश प्रदुषणाची व्याख्या अशी केली आहे. “अयोग्य व गरजेपेक्षा जास्त केलेला कृत्रिम प्रकाशाचा उपयोग”. याचे अनेक प्रकार असु शकतात जसे आभा, प्रमाणाबाहेरील प्रखर प्रकाश, आकाशात परावर्तित होणारा पृथ्वीवरील प्रकाश, आवश्यकता नाही अशा ठिकाणी लावलेले मोठ मोठे प्रकाशाचे झोत!
वायु, पाणी प्रदुषणाइतके प्रकाश प्रदुषण जरी लागलीच मनुष्यास घातक नसले तरी पृथ्वीच्या दिर्घकालिन आरोग्यासाठी घातक असलेल्या मोठ्या धोक्यांमधे प्रकाश प्रदुषणाचा समावेश होतो.
प्रकाश प्रदुषण ही अशी गोष्ट आहे की हे जर कमी केले तर कुणाचेच कसलेही नुकसान होणार नाही. असे करताना फक्त एकच करायचे आहे, ते म्हणजे आवश्यकता आहे तेवढेच बल्ब लावणे. अनावश्यक दिवे काढणे वा बंद करण्याने ऊर्जेची देखील खुप मोठ्या प्रमाणात बचत होईल.
एलईडी बल्ब च्या वापरानंतर ऊर्जेची बचत होत असली तरी स्वस्त असल्याने लोक यांचा उपयोग खुप मोठ्या प्रमाणावर करीत आहेत. बल्ब पावताना मुख्यत्वे करुन आपणास जेवढ्या भुभागाला प्रकाशैत करायचे आहे, त्याही पेक्षा जास्त दुरवर प्रकाश या दिव्यांचा सर्व दिशांना पसरला जातो.या एलईडी दिव्यांच्या प्रकाशातुन निळ्या रंगांच्या छटा येतात की ज्या अनेक प्राणी-पक्षी-किटकांसाठी जीवघेण्या आहेत. त्यामुळे एलईडी मुळे ऊर्जेची बचत जरी होत असली तरी एकंदरीत विचार करता एलईडीचा उपयोग देखील मर्यादीत राखणे सर्वांच्याच हिताचे आहे.
प्रकाश प्रदुषण नक्की कसे होते?
एलईडी मधुन उत्सर्जित होणारी निळे-पांढरे प्रकाशकिरणे घातक असली तरी त्यांचा उपयोग नीटपणे केला तर ऊर्जाबचत व काळोख्या रात्री अशा दोन्ही गोष्टी साधल्या जाऊ शकतात.
भारतातील जटिंगा गावातील एक उदाहरण आहे. हजारोंच्या संख्येने या गावात दरवर्षी प्रवासी पक्षी मरतात. याच्या कारणांबाबत चर्चा करताना असे समजते की स्थलांतरादरम्यान दिशाहिन होऊन हजारो पक्षी या गावातील मोठ्या प्रकाशझोतांकडे आकर्षित होऊन थेट दिव्यांनाच धडकतात.
प्रवासी पक्षी मुख्यत्वे करुन रात्रीच्या वेळीच प्रवास करतात. डाऊन टु अर्थ नावाच्या एका स्वयंसेवी संस्थेच्या संकेत स्थळावरील एका लेखात त्यांनी सांगितल्या प्रमाणे रात्रीच्या वेळी स्थलांतरी होणा-या प्रजातीच्या, ३५ हजार पक्षांचा बळी शहरातील रात्रीच्या अनावश्यक प्रदुषणाने घेतला आहे. त्यामुळे पक्षांना वाचवायचे असेल तर घराबाहेरील, बिल्डींग बाहेरील अनावश्यक लाईट्स बंद करा असा सल्ला या वेबसाईट ने दिला आहे.
डिसेंबर २०१८ मध्ये, केरळ मधील कोझीकोड मध्ये वयाने लहान एक मोठा फ्लेमिंगो पक्षी, स्थलांतरादरम्यान इतर पक्षांपासुन लांब गेला व सागरी किना-यावर येऊन चुकला. काही असंस्कृत लोकांनी दगड, बाटल्या मारुन त्या पक्ष्याला जखमी केले. त्यावर उपचार करण्याचा प्रयत्न देखील झाला पण त्याचा जीव वाचवता आला नाही. ज्यावेळी ही माहिती सर्वांना समजली तेव्हा तेथील १५ हजार विद्यार्थ्यांनी रात्रीच्या वेळी सर्वांनी एकत्र प्रत्येकाच्या घरातील व बाहेरील लाईट्स काही काळासाठी बंद करुन या घटनेचा निषेध केला होता.
समुद्र किनारपट्टीच्या भागात, समुद्री कासवांचे प्रजनन होते. ज्या भागात प्रकाशप्रदुषण जास्त आहे अशा भागात अंड्यातुन बाहेर आलेली कासवांची पिले वाट चुकतात व योग्य वातावरण योग्य वेळेत न मिळाल्यामुळे मरतात देखील. ही गोष्ट सर्वज्ञात आहे.
भारतासारख्या देशामध्ये जिथे अजुन प्लास्टीक, हवा व प्राणी प्रदुषणासारख्या जघन्य समस्येच्या बाबतीत उदासिनता दिसुन येते तिथे प्रकाशप्रदुषणाबाबतीत येत्या काळातरी समाजाकडुन काहीतरी योग्य होईल असे वाटत नाही. भारत हा जगातील सर्वात जास्त प्रकाश प्रदुषण करणा-या देशांच्या यादी मध्ये अग्रस्थानी आहे. परंतु केरळ मधील विद्यार्थ्यांच्या निषेधामुळे आशेचे किरण दिसताहेत हे मात्र नक्की.
आपले शरीर आणि प्रकाश यांचा संबध आपल्या डोळ्यातील बुबुळापासुन सुरु होतो. डोळ्यावर पडलेला प्रकाश आपल्या मेंदुला एक विशिष्ट हार्मोन शरीरामध्ये तयार करण्यापासुन परावृत्त करतो. यामुळे आपल्या शरीरातील चयापचय मंदावते व भुक लागत नाही. सुर्यास्ता नंतर आपल्या शरीरामध्ये या हार्मोन ची निर्मिती प्रक्रिया सुरु होऊन मध्यरात्री मोठ्या क्षमतेने निर्मिती होते. याचे कारण असे की रात्री झोपेत असताना भुक लागु नये. निसर्गनियमानुसार मनुष्य रात्री झोपलाच पाहिजे. व सुर्योदयाच्या आसपास जागा झाला पाहिजे. असे केले तर आपण आपले आरोग्य देखील सांभाळु शकतो. परंतु जास्त प्रमाणात केलेला कृत्रिम प्रकाशाचा उपयोग माणसाच्या स्वःतच्या आरोग्याला देखील हानिकारक झालेला आहे.
रात्रीच्या वेळच्या जैविक क्रिया प्रक्रिया अंधारावर अवलंबुन असतात, त्या नुसत्या झोपेवर अवलंबुन नसतात. हे जसे माणसांचे आहे तसेच इतर प्राणीमात्रंचे देखील आहे. त्यातच रात्रीच्या काळोखात सक्रिय होणा-या विशिष्ट प्राणी, पक्षी, किटकांच्या अस्तित्वावरच घाला , मनुष्याच्या वीजेच्या अतिरेकी वापराने घातलेला आहे.

तत्वज्ञानी लोक म्हणतात की हे रात्रीचे आकाश आपणास एकाच वेळी दोन भिन्न टोकांचा अनुभव देतात. या अंतहिन अशा ब्रह्मांडामध्ये आपले अस्तित्व किती क्षुल्लक आहे असा अनुभव देखील आपणास येतो तर आपण याच अफाट अशा ब्रह्मांडाचाच एक भाग आहोत व आपण देखील महान अशी भावना देखील आपल्या मनात या रात्रीच्या आकाशामुळे येते.
प्रकासप्रदुषण कमी प्रमाणात का होईना चर्चेचा व त्यावर उपाययोजना करण्याचा विषय होऊ लागलेला आहे. कॅनडा ने पक्ष्यांना सोईस्कर अशा प्रकाश व्यवस्थाम्साठी कायदे एकोणिसाव्या शतकाच्या शेवटच्या दशकातच तयार करुन त्यावर अंमलबजावणी देखील सुरु केली. टोरोंटो , वीशिंगटन डीसी, न्यु यॉर्क अशा शहरातील प्रशासनांदेखील नुकत्याच अशा उपाययोजना करण्यास सुरुवत केली आहे. २०१६ मध्ये अमेरीकन मेडीकल असोसियेशन ने निळ्या-पांढ-या प्रकाश प्रदुषणाला कमी करण्यासाठी व नियंत्रित करण्यासाठी पावले उचलली. फ्लॅगस्टाफ, अरिझोना हे अमेरिकेतील पहिले शहर आहे की ज्यास आतंरराष्ट्रीय डार्क स्काय सोयायटीने डार्क स्काय समाज म्हणुन जाहीर केले. शिकागो शहराची वाटचाल अशाच रात्रीच्या काळोख्या शहराकडे होत आहे.
युरोपातील काही भाग तर पर्यटन व्यवसायाच्या दृष्टीने काळोख्या रात्रींसाठी हळु हळु तयार होत आहेत. यातुन मानवतेला पुन्हा एकदा त्या अंतहिन अशा काळाच्या पडद्याशी जोडण्याचे काम ही शहरे करीत आहेत. अमेरिकेतील जॅस्पर हे असेच एक शहर आहे. शहराच्या बाहेर अगदी काही किमी वर आकाशप्रेमींना ता-यांनी गच्च भरलेले आकाश दिसते. या शहरातील प्रशासनाने एक विशिष्ट फेस्टीव्हलच भरवण्याचा पायंडा पाडलेला आहे. तो म्हणजे डार्क स्काय फेस्टीव्हल. या फेस्टीव्हल ला अक्षरशः हजारो लोक येतात. यातुन स्थानिकांना रोजगार निर्माण होतोय. उत्तर अमेरिका, युरोपामध्ये अशी डार्क स्काय उद्द्याने, अभयारण्ये नव्याने उद्यास येत आहेत.
भारतामध्ये देखील अशा उपाय योजना करणे गरजेचे झाले आहे. आकाशातील ग्रह ता-यांचा अभ्यास करणा-या खगोलींना प्रकाशप्रदुषण विरहीत काळेकभिन्न आकाश हल्ली दिसेनासे झाले आहे. असे झाल्यामुळे अंतरिक्ष विज्ञानातील भविष्यातील अनेक संधी व भविष्यातील अनेक भारतीय शास्त्रज्ञ, अभ्यासक आपण तयारच होऊ देत नाही आहोत.
सोबतच सामान्य जनांना जीवन जगण्यातुन थोडी उसंत मिळावी, नवीन प्रेरणा मिळावी, समाधान मिळावे, शांतचित्त व्हावे यासाठी देखील ता-यांनी गच्च भरलेले, प्रकाशप्रदुषण विरहीत आकाश खुप महत्वाचे आहे.

The Orionid meteor shower is the second meteor shower created by Comet Halley. The Eta Aquarids in May is the other meteor shower created by debris left by Comet Halley. Halley takes around 76 years to make a complete revolution around the Sun. It will next be visible from Earth in 2061.
